Tolerability

» Calcium products are generally considered to be safe and well tolerated

» The data available for the tolerability of Calcia Calcium tablets show that the product is well tolerated

» In a study by Lebas et al, Calcia Calcium 500 mg was given twice daily for up to 6 months to 1340 patients with a median age of 64 years1

» Adverse events were infrequent; this table shows the most commonly reported adverse events after 3 and 6 months of treatment1

» The majority of adverse events occurred in patients who were also receiving concomitant medication unrelated to calcium supplementation1

» Calcia treatment causes few side effects

» In a study by Thomas and Meunier, patients (n=190) were randomised to receive either two chewable tablets, each containing 500 mg calcium and 400 IU vitamin D3 (Calcia), or two sachets, each containing 500 mg calcium in the form of calcium gluconolactate and carbonate, plus 2 drops vitamin D2 (400 IU per drop), twice daily for at least 10 weeks1

» The adverse-event symptoms were monitored before and after treatment and are detailed in this table1

» Both treatments were well tolerated, although Calcia tablets caused fewer adverse events, especially abdominal bloating1
